Are Multivitamins Necessary For Draper Kids?

Hello Draper! Welcome to today’s Draper children’s nutrition post. I am Melanie Green, and I promote children’s health in Draper and the 84043 zip code area.

Today’s post discusses children’s vitamins. Many Draper parents give their kids a chewable or liquid multivitamin. We all know that it is essential for Draper kids to get sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals and we often give them a pill to fill in nutritional gaps, just in case. Are multivitamins necessary for Draper kids?

I have found that Draper pediatricians have varying opinions about this issue. Some Salt Lake City children’s doctors recommend parents give their children vitamins in pill form or at least don’t discourage it.

More importantly, Draper pediatricians urge parents to feed their children a variety of nutritious foods, presumably because vitamins and minerals in foods are better absorbed.

The Mayo Clinic website offers the following advice for Draper parents who give their children a multivitamin:1

Make sure the multivitamin is designed for your child’s age group.
Choose one that provides 100 percent of the daily value (DV) for all vitamins and minerals.
Store multivitamins out of your child’s reach and make it clear that they are not candy.
Don’t use multivitamins as a replacement for proper nutrition.
